It’s the nurse showing you kindness, or the way your brow furrows in focus.
It’s the first time you see your baby, and the tears that follow.
Everything I do is intentional and respectful. I always introduce myself to every staff member and make sure that its okay that they are in the photos. My focus is on you, the emotion, connection, and all the little pieces of your story that come together during such an important day. It’s about presence, not performance. That way, you can stay in the moment without worrying about anything else.
How Photographers Prepare for Hospital or Home Births in Tacoma
Whether your birth is taking place at Madigan Army Medical Center or at the birth center at St. Joes, I first do my homework before labor begins. That prep work helps the whole experience go smoother and feel calmer.
Before your due date, we’ll chat about your birth plan and preferences. I send over a questionnaire around 25 weeks with specific questions, but during your complimentary maternity session we talk about what you hope your birth looks like.
I talk about how it feels to have a photographer in the room, and I give helpful tips to your spouse. I also send over a birth guide that has a page entirely for your spouse to read.
A backup plan is always discussed so timing and unexpected changes don’t throw anything off. I let you know when you need to call me and when its best for me to arrive during labor to best document it.
I officially go on-call at 38 weeks and I ask for text check-ins for updates and peace of mind. Birth isn’t predictable, but planning ahead makes a difference. When we’re familiar with where and how you plan to give birth, I can enter the space with confidence, and that brings peace of mind to you, too.
Privacy and Comfort During Your Session

Before the session, we’ll talk through what you’re comfortable with.
You get to define your privacy preferences, what’s okay to document, what’s not, and how you’d like the space to be handled.

I move quietly, speak only when necessary, and step out when needed. The best birth photos come from trust and patience. That’s what I aim to build together.
When to Get in Touch and What to Share

Here’s what’s helpful for me to know early on:
Your estimated due date
Where you’ll be giving birth (hospital, home, or birthing center)
Whether you want photo or video or both. I love incorporating videographer but deciding ahead of time is important so that I know during the moment of birth whether you want that on video or photo. Most Moms prefer to have moment of birth on video and photos immediately afterwards but I am more than happy to accommodate how you would like your story documented. I am certified for videography both by Birth Becomes You and Soulful Storytellers so I am more than ready to jump back and forth between photo and video.
Once it gets closer to your due date, we’ll stay in touch so we know when baby is on the way. A quick text when labor starts helps me make it there on time.
What Happens After Baby Arrives
Once you’ve had time to rest and settle in with your new little one, I begin selecting and carefully editing the moments that reflect how your birth felt. I know families love a sneak peek so within 24-48 hours after your birth I send over 10-20 birth images for you to have. It’s special to relive that moment, especially if things moved quickly and it felt like a blur.
Photos are gently edited to bring out soft light and emotion
The full gallery will arrive once everything has been curated and finished thoughtfully, usually 3-5 weeks, sometimes a bit longer if you also have a birth video included in your package
